The honest call
Replaster vs. spot patch, which one is right?
Most San Diego pool owners we visit are trying to decide between a $1,000 patch and a $7,000 replaster. Here's how we think about it, and what we tell you on the on-site visit.
Replaster makes sense when
Replaster the whole pool
- Plaster 10+ years old (standard) or 15+ years (PebbleTec/quartz)
- Surface rough across most of the pool (sandpaper feel)
- Multiple stains, mottled discoloration, or color bleed
- Hollow spots in three or more areas
- You've already patched the same pool twice
- You plan to stay 5+ years
Spot patch is the right call when
Spot patch instead
- Plaster less than 10 years old
- Damage limited to 1–2 small areas
- Pool is structurally sound, no shell movement
- No widespread cracking or hollow spots
- You plan to sell within 2–3 years
- Cost-effective fix that gets you another 5–10 years
How we work
Drain to swim in 10–14 days.
Most San Diego pool replasterers take 3–4 weeks. We do it in 10–14 because our crews are full-time and the prep, the part most contractors rush — happens parallel to material sourcing.
Free on-site assessment
Day 1We measure your pool, inspect the shell, tap-test for hollow spots, and review water-chemistry history. You get a written quote inside 24 hours.
Drain & sandblast existing plaster
Day 2–6Pool is drained and the old plaster is sandblasted down to bare gunite. Structural cracks are injected and patched. A bond coat is applied to lock the new plaster to the shell.
New plaster application
Day 7Single-day application by a master plasterer. Hand-troweled wet-on-wet. Tile and coping masked with kraft paper. Expansion joints sealed before plaster sets.
Fill, brush, balance
Day 8–11Fill begins immediately to prevent etching. Twice-daily brushing for 7 days. Water chemistry balanced on day 1 and again at day 7. This is what makes plaster last 15+ years.
Walkthrough + warranty
Day 11–14Final inspection together. Care instructions, 30-day brushing schedule, and written warranty handed off. Swimming-ready inside 14 days.
